All You Need To Know: Genshin Impact
If you've been around the internet since 2020, I'm sure you have heard of Genshin Impact, a ‘gacha’ Action RPG by HoYoverse. To say that Genshin Impact has redefined the mobile RPG genre is an understatement. With beautiful graphics, unique characters, and deep storytelling, Genshin is as close to AAA as you can get when it comes to mobile gaming.
There are many things to do in Genshin Impact, and it can be easy to get lost with all the activities and pop-ups that overload you with information during the first 10 hours of the game. So, if you are considering giving Genshin a try, here are a few things you should know to get you started.
1. Wish System
Wishing (also known as pulling) is Genshin Impact's gacha mechanic, where you can summon characters from a variety of banners. First, there is the limited-time banner which usually comes in pairs of character and weapon banners. There is also the standard banner with a fixed variety of weapons and characters to pull from. For new players, you will have access to the Beginner's Wish banner where you can get a guaranteed Noelle 4-star character.
To perform a ‘wish’, you would need to spend an Intertwined Fate for the limited-time banners, and an Acquaint Fate for standard banners. You can acquire either of them for 160 Primogems a pop. Primogems can be earned by playing the game in the form of quest rewards, daily commissions (aka ‘dailies’'), events, Spiral Abyss, and more.
Each character and weapon has its own rarity represented by the number of stars. Weapons can range from 3 to 5 stars, while characters range from 4 to 5 stars. It is easy to spend it all on one go, only to not get the characters you want, so plan wisely.
In terms of priorities, we recommend you to focus on characters first, then pulling on weapon banners.
2. Elements and Elemental Reactions
Elemental reactions are part of Genshin Impact's core gameplay loop, where you have a team of 4 characters constantly swapping among each other to generate elemental reactions to cause a variety of effects on the battlefield. There are a total of 7 elements in the game, with each character possessing the power of one corresponding element.
The elements are Anemo, Geo, Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Cryo, and Dendro. The elemental reaction is as follows:
Pyro + Hydro
Pyro + Electro
Pyro + Cryo
Cryo + Hydro
Electro + Hydro
Electro + Cryo
Anemo + Pyro / Hydro / Electro / Cryo
Geo + Pyro / Hydro / Electro / Cryo
Dendro + Pyro
Dendro + Hydro
Dendro + Hydro + Electro
Dendro + Electro
3. Team Building
Each team can have up to 4 characters, and for starters, you should focus on building a core team. Using the above list of reactions, you can build a team based on the types of reactions you want to trigger. Each character has a role of either Main DPS, Sub-DPS and Support. Plan a team and swap rotation accordingly to maximise damage and reactions. Since resources are limited, you should focus on a core team of 4 characters, with an additional 1-2 characters as backup options to swap around.
4. Adventure Rank
Adventure Rank (AR) is Genshin Impact's ranking system that increases the World Level as player's progress. To increase your AR, you need adventurer EXP, which can be farmed by doing quests and dailies. Once you increase your World Level, the monsters become stronger and the game becomes harder, in exchange you get better loot drops from fighting bosses and clearing domains.
5. Pick Up Everything
You will discover loot drops everywhere: from monsters you have defeated, to cutting trees, fruits, flowers, ore and more. As you start you will be short on materials for cooking, levelling up characters, ascending weapons and more, so pick up every loot whenever you can.
6. Teleportation Points
Genshin Impact has a vast open world that you can explore to your heart's content. With tons of treasure chests, side quests, and other activities for you to enjoy. However, going from point A to point B will take forever, so you should unlock teleport waypoints if you come across one. You will be thankful for the hours of running saved.
7. Original Resin
You can think of Original Resin as Genshin Impact's energy system. Like all other mobile games, clearing domains and fighting bosses would require spending Original Resin in order to obtain the rewards. Original Resin caps at 160 and you can get up to 180 Original Resin per day. So you should plan your play time in order to not waste unused Original Resin.
8. Understand Your Priorities
It is easy to be bombarded with loads of information and activities when you start playing Genshin Impact. However, as time and resources are limited, you should focus on the important things before you spend additional time doing other activities. Here is a quick list of what should be prioritised and what can be left to later:
High Priority - Main Storyline, Adventure Rank, Daily Commissions, Domains and Bosses, Levelling Main Party Characters
Low Priority - Artifacts, Fishing, Side Quests, Character Hangout, Quests.
